Learn to Waka
Ko Tāne has provided hands on interactive educational packages to school groups since 2003. Our Learn to Waka package for schools builds on this experience to provide a fun new historical paddling experience designed to incorporate key competencies and support Te Takanga o Te Wā.
Waka on the Avon River is not something new. It's how our forefathers built Christchurch. Māori and early Settlers worked together to build Christchurch by transporting bricks on waka from the corner of Barbadoes Street to Deans House.
180 years later and Waka are back on the Avon. This time for the enjoyment and sharing of our great history and our two people’s journey together to build our phenomenal and resilient city.
Starting in Victoria Square students will learn the significance of the area and the importance of waka in building Ōtautahi Christchurch.
The experience includes:
historical tour of Victoria Square
waka health & safety & orientation
learn to paddles games
waka history and significance
waka haka and chants
a fun race
